Avoid them like the plague

Avoid them like the plague. I arranged car hire through Alamo at London Heathrow. It was done through booking.com. I paid £65.71. When I got to Alamo, there was an enormous queue and a wait of over an hour despite arranging a specific pick up time. When I finally got served, I was told that I could not hire the car as I did not have a credit card. I had an appointment that I missed. Neither Alamo or booking.com will refund me. This is nothing short of theft. This is possibly the worst customer service I have ever experienced.

Remember the Alamo

After being given a detailed warning in the office about all the damage issues I would be responsible for, we went out to our car with the advice to take pictures of any concerns (in the States, the agent accompanies the client to the car for a dual inspection). We found a couple of large stains on the side of the seats, but chose to drive the car anyway. Half-way out the lot, we realized all the commands were in German, including any instructions on how to change it to English. We brought the car back and a new agent out in the lot declared that this was “below our company’s standards,” then issued us a new, larger car as an upgrade.Halfway from Edinburgh to St. Andrews, the tire pressure warning light came on, advising me to check the tire pressures, then reset the warning light. With our tight driving schedule, I wasn’t going to return or go out of my way to find a tire company, so we drove on with that warning light on, and the worries that produced (I didn’t tell my wife). We finally found a tire company where they efficiently checked the tire pressure, said all the tires were at different pressures, read the proper amount on the door panel, and properly adjusted all the tires. However, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t reset the warning light. He advised us that if we drove 30 mph for 30 minutes, the light should go off. (No charge, but a 20 pound tip for the peace of mind). That didn’t fit into our driving plans, so we drove the rest of the way with the light on, at least knowing the tire pressures were correct. We arrived in Glasgow, explained the situation to the local agent, who was very supportive and apologetic, explaining the constant issue of tire replacements on rentals. He didn’t charge us for the slight top off of the gas tank, and asked if he could do anything else. The Edinburgh manager was alerted and quickly offered “make up for the issues,” simply to keep a bad review away. Two weeks later and no offer or action. Bottom line—avoid Alamo in Edinburgh.

My advice to anyone thinking of using…

My advice to anyone thinking of using Alamo. Don’t. They are great when things go as planned but when it goes wrong then they are by far the most apathetic company I have ever encountered. They Issued me with a lower grade of vehicle at JFK Airport, the vehicle I had prepaid for and had been confirmed was not available at JFK but even though I had booked months in advance no one informed me. The vehicle I was given, bearing in mind I had paid for a Premium Crossover was a battered high mileage (very high) standard crossover. They had nothing else and although this was acknowledged as a mistake on their behalf as of yet I have had no refund of the difference. Only an offer of 3 free days rental for a standard car as an apology for the poor service I have received whilst trying to sort what should a simple issue of a refund of the difference. I haven’t asked for anything else than that, and yet 3 months later I have now been told I am not entitled to a refund? So with Alamo if you do not get what you paid for even though it is fully evidenced on your paperwork you will still be told tough luck.

Horrible experience

Horrible experience, renting at Valencia train station. The personal was very rude and answered their privat Whatsapp conversation for minutes before attending us. Then, as we rented a 7 seater, they asked for 2 credit cards in the name of the main driver, which we had never heard of before. They made us go home, fetch another credit card, and back at the rental place they still did not accept it despite being a valid credit card. So we had to cancel the reservation and they did not reimburse us a single cent of the reservation fee as they claim the credit card was not valid. However, we tried to chance the reservation or even make a new reservation in a colleagues's name, but apparently they had no car available (the cancellation of the reservation apparently took time...)The whole experience was ridicolous.

ZERO STARS for Alamo Mykonos Airport

ZERO STARS for Alamo Mykonos airport car hire, do not recommend. Firstly - nobody came from Alamo to collect us to take us to their offsite airport location, said they didn’t have our details!! Luckily some very nice person from another car hire company dropped us off. Secondly - the lady on reception and the man that took us to our car tried to pressure us into taking an additional €240 for extra insurance, to which we said NO to. Thirdly - we got home checked our credit card and they have taken €290 of which we hadn’t authorised or agreed to and actually have no idea what this cost is for. Car was in same condition when we dropped it back, as when we collected it with no issues. Fourthly - getting hold of the company to get a refund is proving to be difficult. DO NOT RECOMMEND

ZERO STARS

ZERO STARS! AVOID AVOID AVOID!20km onto our drive the engine warning lights came on and the vehicle went in to limp-mode on a very busy motorway heading out of Marseille airport. We had to arrange our own breakdown as Alamo refused to do it. It took two hours to turn up after many phone calls back and forth with Alamo. The breakdown service wouldn't take the vehicle as it was "drivable" in limp-mode. This is the agreement they have with Alamo. So back onto a very busy 130kmp motorway at 18kmp which is all the vehicle would do.Managed to get off at the next junction without getting killed. More phone calls to Alamo to get a replacement vehicle, with always a promise they would ring back but they never did. Limped 35km to the hotel trying to use back roads to avoid accidents. Eventually at the hotel another phone call and again a promise of a return call from management. Guess what? The office closed and no call was recieved. This is the worst company of any kind I've ever dealt with EVER.LET'S SEE WHAT TOMORROW BRINGS!Oh, and I had a 95year old in the car with meUPDATE - No return phone call in the morning and when I rang them again "surprise" they have no record of my phone calls.I took matters into my own hands and drove (in limp-mode) to the nearest Alamo office. I was then told that there are no cars available and would have to drive back to where I picked it up from. This would have been impossible due to the engine being stuck in limp-mode. After having a very forceful conversation with the staff we were driven to what amounted to a back street garage with empty beer bottles, litter and an old mattress strewn all over the lot.We were given a much lower spec vehicle which was badly damaged on every panel and bumper, filthy on the inside and out and not fully fuelled up.No help was proffered to us to try and resolve what was Alamo's issue with a faulty, dangerous vehicle. No effort was made by Alamo staff to get us a vehicle which worked.THE WORST COMPANY I'VE EVERY DEALT WITH!

Fast and Smoth processes

A smooth experience renting a car in Edinburgh with Alamo. I had the reservation before hand and the transint by the desk was a matter of 5 min. Everything was perfectly explained by the assistant (Rebekah). No problems with the car, everything was in perfect conditions with a clean and new car. Finally the returning process was also incredible fast and easy, over the fly the assistant reviewed the car and I got the deposit refund really fast. On the contrary I travelled in a group and the other part did a reservation with Sixt and during the pick up process they were for more than 20 minutes dealing with the assistant that was trying to sell a lot of extras, car upgrade and a lot of stuff trying to increase the price of the reservation. In comparison the experience with Alamo was really nice and smooth, for sure I will repeat in the future.

I felt like I was being scammed.

Booked a mid range SUV (Nissan Qashqai) or similar to pick up at Belfast International Airport. Had to pay £25 extra to drive it to Donegal. Yes, they do tell you... in the small print, when you look for it. Basically dishonest not to highlight this for a fair price comparison. Got given a much smaller SUV (Renault Captur) and was asked to pay extra to get the one I ordered. What a scam!! The car was handed over with about 100 miles less fuel in the tank, which is impossible to refill to that level. So you end up giving them fuel for free. Return staff were unhelpful, just chatting and I had to go and ask them what to do. Not what you want, when you are in a hurry. All round disappointment and unlikely to rent again from them.
